Jz finished watching the 5 episode direct-to-dvd Japanese anime, Sentou Yousei Yukikaze (戦闘妖精・雪風) which is a anime adaptation from a sci-fi novel of the same name by Chōhei Kambayashi (神林長平). It was being adapted for commemorate Bandai Visual's 20th anniversary.
The anime is a Top Gun style anime. Top Gun is the famous movie starring Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer that features pilots piloting jet fighters. The story revolves around Lieutenant Rei Fukai and his jet fighter B-503 "Yukikaze", a futuristic "advanced armed tactical reconnaissance plane equipped with a near-sentient AI (artificial intelligent) computer system" and their battle with JAMs (aliens basically...) that has tried to invade earth in the last 44 years of the futuristic era. Unlike normal 'alien invasion' stories this one doesn't include too much of what IS or WHAT the JAMs are doing invading Earth. This anime is very much, a serious anime that is full of action and as well as 0% funny moments. What makes this anime quite special, is that it follows and shows real life code words, movement as well as behavior of Air Forces.
Even though it has just 5 episodes (all which can be viewed on Youtube, just search Yukikaze Operation), all 5 episodes takes 3 years to complete. Couldn't have imagine how it would be like chasing this anime in that time....
Overall, the anime gets a 9 out of 10 from me. It really really is good. The artwork is good, CGI animations are top notch, i reckon this is better then the Macross series. The only drawback is that i personally felt so attracted and bound to it i wished for more episodes, as well as more clear and well executed storyline. The origin of the aliens were never explain, the closest it gets is that it is believed to be a being that does things mathematically, like a computer, as well as some of the words and action were abit hard to understand, but this is probably due to the more mature scripts as well as imagination being played. At the end i was reluctant to watch the last epi, which is episode 5, cuz i dun wan this to end so quickly.
Thats how good it was.
A clip of the first part of the first episode...
